Here we are, almost half way through the term! Our days are starting to show promise of spring and warmer weather.
As you will see from the articles below, classes have thoroughly enjoyed watching and celebrating the amazing successes our NZ Athletes have had competing in the Olympics. What amazing achievements and role modelling for our students to witness, their determination and sheer ‘grit’ to get to the finish lines has been nothing short of inspirational.
Our Board of Trustees met last week and our DP’s, Sinead Heckett and Kirstin Blanchard, presented the Mid-Year Achievement data and reporting. Red Beach School students are tracking incredibly well with regards to Numeracy and Literacy benchmarks nationally.
As I write this, our school is actively involved in Maths Week activities. The buzz in the hall today with the year 3-6 competing in the “Times Tables Rockstars” was exhilarating with spectators cheering on each set of contestants. The speed at which these students answered math challenges was amazing.
Next week our Tongan Language week commences, and Book Week is on the horizon, check out the details below.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend - fingers crossed this sunshine continues.

On Friday 16th August your child will come home with an information pack and details on setting up their raise-it fundraising page. Each child will select a “daily reading goal” to strive towards. Moving Smart Programme
Moving Smart Programme
We recently joined hands with the moving smart programme because we also believe that a moving child is a learning child.
Moving Smart is an education professional development company with a unique focus on the role movement plays in early childhood development and readiness for formal learning. Moving Smart is committed to engaging and fostering children’s natural, move to learn style while supporting teachers and parents to understand the comprehensive benefits of all that wiggling.
Monica Coetzee provided us with unique ideas and clever ways to get the best out of PMP. Mrs Penny Taylor attended their training course and we are excited to start with the brand new Moving Smart PMP Programme in 2025.
The Year 2 classes have had a busy start to the term. We have made the most of the Olympic Games to learn about some of the sports played, and the countries involved. The year 2 children love Art and so we took the opportunity to create some fantastic art work with the Olympics as our motivation and inspiration.
Room 2 are very proud of their artistic creations.
Room 12 learned about the host city, Paris, and drew some pictures of a famous landmark -The Eiffel Tower. We then created our own athletes out of tinfoil. Don’t they look great!
Room 13 learned about South Africa. We also had a go at drawing their colourful flag in a fun and educational Olympics activity booklet we’ve been working through! For our art, we made some lovely Olympic torches out of paint handprints.
Room 30 created some silhouettes of different athletes and then decorated the background with their favourite pastel colours.
Year ¾ MIDDLE SCHOOL
Room 15 and 16 had the privilege of two Olympians visiting to share their experiences. Keith Trask, a Room 16 grandparent, shared about winning a rowing Gold Medal at Los Angeles in 1984. We were excited to see his medal and learn about what it takes to be an Olympic champion. Room 16 parent Darren Smith also came to share about his Olympic experiences as a Black Sticks hockey player and coach. We enjoyed finding out about what it is like to stay in the Olympic Village. Our guest reminded us that through hard work and perseverance, anything is possible!
Year ⅚ SENIOR SCHOOL
This term, the Year 5/6 tamariki have embarked on an exciting inquiry into the world of the Olympics! We began by delving into the rich history of the Ancient Olympics, exploring the origins of this prestigious event and the various sports that were part of it. Students were fascinated to learn about the traditions and values that have carried through to the modern-day Olympics.
Our journey then took us to the present, where we focused on current New Zealand athletes and the diverse sports they compete in. We have been examining what it takes to be an elite athlete, including the dedication, training, and perseverance required to reach the highest levels of sport. Students have not only gained knowledge about the Olympics but also developed a deeper appreciation for the hard work and commitment of our athletes.
Next, we look forward to learning more about the Paralympics, celebrating the incredible achievements of athletes with disabilities. This part of our learning will highlight the importance of inclusivity and the extraordinary spirit of all Olympians. Our inquiry will then integrate the technology curriculum with our focus being on: How sports and sporting technology have evolved, reflecting changes in society, culture, and technology.

A FRIENDLY REMINDER
Please don't park in our Staff Carpark. We need these parks to be available for staff. We have many itinerate and special needs staff who come and go throughout the day transporting resources and sometimes students.
If you need to collect an unwell child, you are most welcome to come down close to the office for pick up.
Thank you for your understanding.
Our Year 5/6 and Year 1/2 students loved their presentations from Dean Kent, a three time Olympic swimmer, who captivated the students with his story of hard work and dedication. Emphasising the value of perseverance, he encouraged the children to pursue their passions and never give up on their dreams. His story of being the smallest and not being able to win a race but never, ever giving up and using this as motivation to work harder was very inspiring.
Year 5/6 and Year 3/4 students were excited to have Samantha Charlton, a three time Olympic hockey representative come to speak about her journey with us. Sam's engaging talk included two key messages. Firstly, to distinguish between what you can control and what you can't. Ensuring that you focus on what you can control. Secondly, Sam highlighted, through her experience of achieving 4th place in two consecutive Olympics, that excellence is about being your best, not the best. Children who were chosen to ask Samatha a question were very lucky when they all got to hold her Commonwealth gold medal.
