LATEST NEWS AND ACTIVITIES FROM OUR TEAMS
Colour Run!
Thank you to everyone who supported our Colour Run! It was such a fun afternoon and the tamariki had a truly amazing time. It was awesome to see so many smiling faces.
Our class prize winners from raising the most money on Raise It were:
1st Place: Room 17
2nd Place: Room 15
3rd Place: Room 9
They all got to enjoy their prizes to end last term and we re very excited to do so.
We were able to raise enough to cover out new football goals and put money towards additional school beautification projects that are currently in the works. We are hoping our new goals will be ready to go later this term.
Mothers at Heart
Thank you for coming to our Mothers at Heart event. It was lovely to host you all for a yummy afternoon tea and performances by Glee and Kapa Haka. We heard lots of positives from visits to classes and know that your children enjoyed spending time doing a craft with you. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make this event happen.
Travelwise
Road Safety Week and our fabulous Year 6 Travelwise Ambassadors would like to remind the RBS Community of some of our rules around our school. All children must:
*Use the pedestrian crossing when crossing the road and listen to the instructions given by the road patrollers
*Wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter to school
*Walk their wheels across the crossing and inside the school gates
Be safe everyone!
PINK SHIRT DAY
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Year 1 Performing Arts
Over this term Year 1 tamariki is taking part in a Performing Arts rotation with a focus on Te Reo and Te Ao Maori. This includes Waiata, Poi, Rakau, Storytelling and some Visual Art in the lead up to our Matariki celebration at the end of the term.
Storytelling/Drama
Rūma whā has been learning about The Ruru in the big book 'Owl Babies'. We got to know the characters in the book, understanding their physical appearances and inner characteristics. Tamariki acted out the baby owls waiting patiently for their Mother's return using expressive voices and effective body language. The Owl Mother swoops through the trees to be reunited with her babies..
Rakau Sticks
A Māori stick game consisting of the rhythmic throwing, catching and tapping of the Rakau sticks. Traditionally boys and young men used this game to increase dexterity and alertness, while girls and young women were thought to benefit from increased skills for poi and dances.
Waiata
We started to learn some of the waiata that we sing as a school during events and will be joined by some of our Year 6 Kapa Haka Leaders to walk us through them.
Matariki Art
We are going to make Lanterns, the perfect symbol for lighting & brightening the path for the Māori new year. We will use tissue paper and glue to cover with colour and with a LED safety light our lanterns will light up the night sky beautifully. We are going to bring them to our Matariki celebration in week 9.
Poi Dance
Wāhine (female) dancers perform the Māori Poi, a dance performed with balls attached to flax strings, swung rhythmically. The Poi dance was originally used by the Māori women for keeping their hands flexible for weaving and by the men for strength and coordination required during battle.
LEARNING ABOUT ANIMALS
The students in Year 2 have been busy learning about animal groups. Our specific objective was to recognise that there are lots of different living things in the world and that they can be grouped in different ways. The children learned about mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, insects and fish. They sorted animals into their groups and gave reasons why an animal belonged in a certain group. We were looking forward to using our learning during our trip to the zoo but, unfortunately, the weather prevented us from going last week. We are planning to reschedule our trip for Term 4.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Year 3 & 4 - Maths Art Week:
In the last week of term 1 the year 3 & 4 students were involved in a school wide Maths art week where students found that Maths is not just about boring numbers and worksheets but can be fun, engaging and informative through the magic of art and creativity.
There was an opportunity for all the classes to do a tour of the school and take a look at everyone’s master pieces and the year 3 & 4 students did not disappoint! Not only did the year 3 & 4 classes integrate Maths and Art but also other areas of the curriculum. Our creations included (but not limited to) Polish art cutting, geometric animals, fraction circle art, zentangle cubes, 2D shape robots, angles to create aquariums, symmetry, reflection and translations! Here are some pictures to show how creative our year 3 & 4’s are!
SENIOR SCHOOL
Love Soup
Caitlin O’Malley, from Room 17, proposed a plan to the class that we collect non-perishable food for Love Soup. This is a wonderful initiative that has seen our students learn to give back to their community. Caitlin will be able to sign off on one of her M.A.D (Make a Difference) Homelink challenges by organising this event. But it didn’t end there, she showed her RICH Heart by extending this idea to all year 3-6 students who wish to take on this challenge for their own M.A.D Homelink Challenge. Over the last two weeks, RBS has gathered 8 boxes full of food for Love Soup! Thank you to everyone who contributed. Photos will be sent out soon to add to your M.A.D slides.
Inquiry - Space
In Year 5 and 6 we are inquiring into Earth and Space. To launch our inquiry, we had an asteroid land at school and came up with plans as to what we would do if Earth became uninhabitable - where would we go? How would we survive? From this we had lots of wonderings to explore. What would it be like to live on another planet? What about gravity? What does the moon do?
To help us find our answers, we have started to do a range of experiments and inquiries into all things space. For example, what is the effect of gravity on us and how would that change on different planets? How bright is the sun and how does that affect each planet?
We are excited to keep exploring through research and experiments and are looking forward to our Zoom call with astronomists from Stardome coming up this week.
MOTUORA
This term on Tuesday afternoons, Motuora students are going to NHG Gymnastics in their new facility based in Karepiro drive. It is great for the student’s co-ordination, strengthening muscles and overall gross motor skills. The students love the challenge and freedom of an open safe space to move. Here they are having fun and are supported with our teachers and teacher aides.
