Dear Parents and Caregivers
So much has been happening here at school as reported by the various teams below.
Many of these activities have been able to happen because of our wonderful parent support. Thank you one and all!
Our school is looking great - our students are enjoying the improvements to our playground markings - thank you to our hardworking Community Committee for their ongoing fundraising efforts. Everyone is really looking forward to the upcoming Colour Run - to date we have had $9572 pledged donations. This is a great fundraiser for sharing with family far and beyond - it is not too late to sign up. Your child’s teacher has been sending out all the information on how to do this.
Our Minions are really making a difference around our school - under our caretaker Phil’s guidance the gardens are looking amazing. I know that the learning that is happening here is spilling over into many homes (seed propagation etc)
Our Kapa Haka, under the guidance of Carla Wintle and Whaea Shelley have been working hard learning new waiata etc
Some of the students have been down to Halldene Rest Home to entertain the residents and others have represented our school at the recent Kotahitanga Day - a day that involves all the kura here on the coast. (See pictures below).
Pacifika Leaders and Glee singers for 2024 have also been busy with their activities, we look forward to hearing some lovely singing at events.
Our Wheels Day organised by teacher Anna Hedstrom and the Year 6 Travelwise leaders was lots of fun - all the decorated “wheels “ added to the enjoyment of the event.
A huge thanks to our local Rotary organisation who have been fundraising for our school with the most recent event being a Golf tournament on Friday. Their fundraising efforts will not only provide our students with a new high jump mat but will also contribute to enhancing our mathematics programme for our senior school plus providing support for our younger learners. So yes, everyone is benefitting!
Just a reminder that we have Easter Break sees our school closed from Friday 29th March through to Tuesday 2nd April. School gets underway again on Wednesday 3rd April.
Safe travels if you are heading away over Easter and fingers crossed we all get to enjoy some settled weather.

LATEST NEWS AND ACTIVITIES FROM OUR TEAMS
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Year 1 had Constable Bryan and Constable John visit us to teach us all about Road Safety. (Health Curriculum).
Here are a few important things we learned:
- always cross at a pedestrian crossing or traffic light
- always cross with an adult
- walk across the road or walk along the footpath - no running!
- take a step back from the curb when waiting to cross
- never cross between two parked cars where moving traffic can't see you
- get out of the car on the footpath side
- always wear your seatbelt
We all did an amazing job at practising these things up on the road.
Happy Easter chicks from Room 7
MIDDLE SCHOOL
Year 3 /4s had their annual sleepover on Thursday 14th March.
We were lucky to be able to go to Red Beach Surf Club for planned activities including Boogie boarding and swimming with Lifeguards and doing beach flags. We came back to school for dinner and more amazing experiences with Om from CraftLab. Om showed us how to make dough to roll around sticks to cook doughnuts over the open fire. Om also showed us how to rub wood together using a bow to create smoke. We slept over at school in classrooms with our friends. This was a wonderful experience for all our Year 3’s and 4’s.
SENIOR SCHOOL
Genius Hour
The year 5/6 students have been participating in ‘Genius Hour’, an afternoon elective where students can take ownership of their learning by choosing an area of interest to pursue. Each term will bring a new focus for Genius hour, where the choices range from The Arts, Science, Sports and more. This term, students have been enjoying Charcoal Sketching, Pumped Up, Theatre Sports, Coding, Music and an extension of Maths focusing on an upcoming competition.
Te Kotahitanga Day
On Friday the 22nd of March, Whaea Shelley and Miss Wintle took 8 students from Kapa Haka to participate in Te Kotahitanga Day. Our first gathering was focused on coming together as schools in our region to connect, learn, and embrace kaupapa Maori. Students participated in three workshops on the day including Pa Harakeke, Ki-o-Rahi, and Waiata. It was a very special day for all involved. Well done to Max for delivering his whaikorero with confidence, and to Unaiki, Aroha, Namila, Brax, Tama, Olivia, and Marni for representing our school for the day.
MOTUORA
Learning Cooking Skills in Motuora
Every Thursday you will find our tamariki participating in cooking.
They love this time and look forward to it each week. The skills they learn are lifeskills like following a pictorial recipe, cutting, spreading, assembling and other cooking skills they can use at home. Through this they are learning to be independent lifelong learners.
Each session has a learning intention which the children read (or it is spoken to them) prior to the session. Then they follow the physical model before them with the visual recipe to prepare the item. Many of them take the recipe home to try again with their family.

Year 3 and 4 classes focused on:

Interschool Cricket
On the 7th of March, RBS took 4 teams to the interschool Cricket day at Victor Eaves Park. The kids had been practising their bowling skills leading up to the event and had a blast on the day. All students made us proud, showing their RICH Hearts throughout the day.
This year, we entered 1 A-Grade team, 2 B-Grade boys teams, and 1 B-Grade girls team. All B-grade teams had a win in the rounds and enjoyed a fun round to end the day.
After an amazingly close semi-final, we are proud to say our Boys A Grade team made the final to play against Wainui. Again, the final was close, only missing out by 6 points. Our highlight of the day was seeing the expressions of excitement from across the park as it was announced that the boys had made the finals. Although they didn’t win the trophy this year, they sure did us proud.
A huge thank you to our amazing parents who support us with transport on the day and an extra special thanks to Rasha Hamed, Abner Myloth, Natalie Flynn, Charlie Harris and Milosh Kovacevich our amazing team managers.
